Differences between the X series and the Shikiri series
The X series designed by Takeshii Nii is the origin of all other series. It was first available in 1970. Shikiri series was released in 2017. While retaining the shape of the X series, it was newly designed to incorporate elements of Japan and Scandinavia with an awareness of overseas markets and modern living spaces.
Differences in seat fabric
X series: the seats are dyed after weaving
Shikiri series: the yearn is pre-dyed and woven later to create distinctive patterns
Differences in wood and armrests
X series:
By applying an urethane resin coating to the beech wood, which has a dense and uniform grain, the surface has a moderate luster and a smooth feel. Thanks to the coating, the armrests are resistant to heat and water and more resistant to scratches and stains. Available in two colors: natural and dark brown. Natural shows the beautiful color of the wood itself, and dark brown is a calmer tone and gives a chic impression.
Shikiri series:
The series uses two types of finishes applied to the coarse and heavy-looking oak wood surface: soap finish and charcoal black (urethane resin coating). Soap is made by rubbing the soap on the surface of the wood instead of painting it, so you can enjoy the feel of the wood itself and see it change over time. The charcoal black urethane coating is applied with an open pore finish, retaining the texture of the oak and giving it a charcoal-like impression.
Seating comfort
It was not common to design with ergonomics in mind when Takeshi Nii was active. He designed Nychair X as a "chair for relaxing", and it could be easily seen as that thanks to its structure.
Below we have categorized the "prototypes of the chairs based on support surface" into 6 styles by their purpose on a spectrum with a "working chair" on one end and "relaxing chair" on the other, and placed Nychair X on the graph.
Nychair X and Nychair X Rocking provide a reclined seating positon and a distinctive higher back, which can provide support for the head, placing them in the ""rest"" chair category. They are great companions for watching movies, listening to music, or just taking a pause.
Nychair X 80 has a more upright seat compared to Nychair X and Nychair X Rocking, and the seat height makes it easier to sit down and stand up, which places it in in both the ""light rest"" and ""rest"" categories. Nychair X 80 can be used with a desk or a table, or separately, for reading or talking.
