Traditional Japanese housing uses curtains, folding screens, partition screens, bamboo blinds, and other interior elements as a way to "partition" the space.
These partitions can block dazzling sunlight or the view from the outside but at the same time allow people inside to be aware of light, wind, or sound from outside the partition. They are indispensable items in Japanese houses, where people highly value the changes in the natural world outside.
Nychair X Shikiri is inspired by the concept of a shikiri partition and suggests a lifestyle with a closer connection to nature.
A series that follows in the footsteps of Takeshi Nii and expresses the elements of beauty in Japanese architecture through weaving patterns with different-colored yarns.
The Shikiri series is based on the motif of shikiri partitions seen in traditional Japanese architecture and features misty blueish gray tones that are reminiscent of black ink painting and Scandinavian landscapes.
It brings to mind the atmosphere shared by Denmark, heavily influenced by Japonisme in architecture and design, and Japan. It can be said that this combination is at the root of Rika Kawato's design, born from a Japanese father and a Danish mother.
High-quality fabric made by Japanese craftsmen
To support the whole body and the structure of the chair, we are using a durable cotton fabric that is durable and does not generate static electricity. The distinctive Nychair X Shikiri patterns are manufactured using pre-dyed yarns in different colors, which are later carefully woven at a factory in Takashima City, Shiga Prefecture.

Textile and interior designer
Rika Kawato was responsible for everything from concept creation to textile and coloring design for Nychair X Shikiri. Born to a Japanese father and Danish mother, she spent her childhood in different countries, including the Soviet Union and Sweden, which influenced her and made a fusion of cultures a focal point of her work. Her designs emphasize color and texture, and she is actively working both domestically and internationally.

Fine, continous vertical strips that look like bamboo blinds with white horizontal stripes. A pattern that expresses the light and breeze that enter the room through the blinds.

Soap finish and urethane resin coating that enhance the natural beauty of oak wood surface
Soap finish
This finish is made by rubbing the soap on the surface of the wood, which creates a layer of oils. It allows for appreciating the natural feel and looks of wood as well as observing the aging process.
Charcoal black (urethane resin coating).
The natural and unique sufrace of the oak wood is retained by using oper pore coating. The deep color is reminiscent of charcoal.

The design that fits any time and environment
The chair can be folded and moved between rooms. At only 6.5 kg, Nychair X can be easily carried around by most people. When folded, it remains upright and measures only 15 cm deep, saving storage space when not in use. This simple yet beautiful design withstands the passage of time and seamlessly fits into many living environments, whether Eastern or Western, and may change its function with ever-changing needs of the user.

One of the Nychair X's greatest appeals is that it offers a level of comfort that exceeds expectations. The X-shaped legs slightly open to the sides, and the fabric seat adjusts its shape to accommodate the weight of a person. Its tension acts like a cushion, resulting in a comfortable sitting experience.
Additionally, the seat, which can support almost a whole body, is made with a twill weave technique that provides the fabric with elasticity. Thanks to that, the seat can adjust its shape to the user's body, and provide them with a feeling of gentle embrace.
The subtle design details, such as the height of the backrest, which allows users to rest their heads, the slope of the seat suitable for relaxing, and the height of a seat—all these elements were not only considered from an ergonomic point of view, but also to create an excellent shape for resting.

Comfort with a sense of stability
The first model in Nychair X series. The seat height is the lowest in this model, and it gives the greatest sense of grounding. Thanks to a generous seat depth, the chair allows the whole body to lay back and rest. When paired with Ottoman, it can provide even more relaxing experience.
Shikiri Rocking
A gentle movement that embraces the body
The smooth and gentle motion was possible to achieve thanks to the advanced bending technology. Because the chair moves together with the body, and it is possible to stop at any desired angle, it can be used in a variety of situations: leaned forward for work, leaned backward to peacefully listen to music, in neutral position to watch movies. It is easier to get up due to the higher seating position and the rocking movement.
Shikiri Ottoman
From a partner in resting to a versatile tool
When Ottoman is used together with Nychair X or Nychair X Rocking as a set, it allows you to entrust your whole body in its soft embrace, from head to toe, and enjoy even deeper stages of relaxation.
Many ottomans have a slanted seat to accommodate the shape of the legs and feet better, but Nychair X Ottoman has a flat horizontal seat to serve other purposes as well. With a load capacity of 95 kg, it can of course be used as a stool, but it can also play a variety of flexible roles: with a tray on top, it can be used as a side table; it can be placed at the entrance as a support tool for taking shoes off; it can turn into a temporary storage rack, and so on.
Choose what suits you best from 3 fabric colors and 2 wood colors
The three seat colors include light gray, a horizontally long lattice pattern; blue gray, made with fine horizontal and vertical lines; and dark gray, reminiscent of the squares of the lattice door. You can choose between two wood colors: soap finish, which accentuates the natural characteristics of oak, and uretane resin coating in charcoal black.

Commitment to crafstmanship
The parts used to build Nychair X might be simple, but require advanced crafstmanship to achieve beauty in simplicity. Every part is held to high quality standards, so the chairs resulting from the craftsmanship can be enjoyed for a long time.
Fabric
The removable seat fabric is developed expecially for Nychair X and is manufactured in Japan. The fabric is carefully sewn by craftsmens to make a durable seat, which can comfortably support the weight of the entire body of the user and the chair's structure.
Legs
The legs are made of stainless steel, which does not rust easily. Bending the pipe at a perfect angle to fit into the armrests requires a high level of craftsmanship. The manufacturers take measures to avoid scratching the pipe surface during the bending process.
Screws
To avoid breakage due to deterioration and prevent rust, which can make a screw unmovable, we have used stainless steel in new generation model instead of regular steel.
Armrests
The structure of a human arm was taken into consideration to calculate the optimal angle and height of the armrests. Even a small error in hole positioning might affect the angle of the frame and have a huge impact on the level of comfort, so it was necessary to introduce advanced technological solutions.

Seating comfort
It was not common to design with ergonomics in mind when Takeshi Nii was active. He designed Nychair X as a "chair for relaxing", and it could be easily seen as that thanks to its structure.
Below we have categorized the "prototypes of the chairs based on support surface" into 6 styles by their purpose on a spectrum with a "working chair" on one end and "relaxing chair" on the other, and placed Nychair X on the graph.
Nychair X and Nychair X Rocking provide a reclined seating positon and a distinctive higher back, which can provide support for the head, placing them in the "rest" chair category. They are great companions for watching movies, listening to music, or just taking a pause.
Nychair X 80 has a more upright seat compared to Nychair X and Nychair X Rocking, and the seat height makes it easier to sit down and stand up, which places it in in both the "light rest" and "rest" categories. Nychair X 80 can be used with a desk or a table, or separately, for reading or talking.
