Elegant Flexibility
Japanese Folding Chair ● Adaptable Comfort for All Lifestyles
Nychair X is a folding chair created by designer Takeshi Nii in 1970. Since 2014, FUJIEI Corporation has continued to manufacture and market it under the supervision of Makoto Shimazaki, who gave the Nychair its name.
This documents how six groups of people in Japan and around the world have integrated the chair into their daily lives, and how they have taken advantage of the flexibility of a chair that consists of only six components and can be folded in a compact way.
The individuals we met through this project have embraced mobility as a key part of their lifestyles, engaging with their surroundings in a flexible and dynamic way. They embody the independent spirit that designer Takeshi Nii embodied, and the ingenuity to create their own space for relaxation.
‘Elegant flexibility’ describes how the chairs fit in with their way of life. The chair’s excellent storage capacity and portability is not only convenient, but it also supports the independence of people who want to create their own comfort in their favourite places. Believing in the true value of a lightweight chair, Nychair X will continue to support the lives of people who flexibly change their way of thinking and adapt to the changes in their living environment, society, and their own minds.
