A Little Goes a Long Way

Name: Kaisei Sakae ● Activity: Bicycle mechanic ● Location: One-bedroom apartment ● City: Tokyo, Japan ● Product: Nychair X Rocking

Kaisei Sakae is 26 and was born in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. About two years ago, Kaisei cycled 1,200 km all the way from Kagoshima to Tokyo on his own. Later on, Kaisei joined ‘Blue Lug’, a company that sells custom-made bikes. As a mechanic, he developed his skills by thinking about the different combinations of frames, tyres, handlebars, and smaller parts. Kaisei is flexible with his customers and takes on repairs too. Tailoring the bikes to each person’s preferences, purposes, and body types, he works to make bicycles that can be ridden for a lifetime.

The first place that Kaisei chose to live in Tokyo was a compact one-bedroom apartment, which is unique to Japan. Though the room is not big, Kaisei’s spirit of customisation casually extends throughout the apartment to every corner, creating a relaxing space. Kaisei removed the sliding doors of the closet to build a desk, and placed a dining table in the space that resembles a dokonoma (Japanese alcove). He learned about Nychair X from a friend back home 20 years older than him, who loved using the chair.

Kaisei is still in a period of intense cycling training. On his days off, he loads his bicycle and the Nychair X Rocking into a used car he found back home in Kagoshima and heads out to places rich in nature, like the lakeside in Yamanashi. There is comfort and satisfaction in living in a compact space where his favourite things are close to reach, contrasting with the exhilaration of riding through the wind in open spaces.

The days of using cherished items for a long time, while learning about new things will continue. What kind of places will this way of living between two lifestyles take Kaisei to in the future?

On his days off, Kaisei loads the chair into his car and heads out to places like Yamanashi and Nagano—he takes it wherever he likes. The various experiences Kaisei has lived with the chair have only deepened his attachment to it.

The four screws connecting the armrests and seat pipes may loosen after a long period of use. When there is a gap between the seat and the armrests, it is time for maintenance. Tightening the screws with a standard screwdriver will ensure safe continued use.

Personal balance of relaxation

自ら見つける、くつろぎのバランス

Placing a heavy sofa in small, compact rooms like Kaisei Sakae’s may be challenging. However, having a comfortable chair to relax in can enhance the ways time is spent in the room. The Nychair X can be stored away when not in use, making it ideal for small spaces in Japan. The uniquely curved legs of the Nychair X Rocking allow deep relaxation at an angle that is best for each user, while the rebound helps one to stand up quickly, accommodating the lifestyles of people who are always on the go. The back-and-forth rocking also reduces damage to tatami mats as the legs slide on the floor.
